What is MAMMOGRAM ?
Mammogram is an X-ray screening of the breast for early detection of breast cancer.
Who needs MAMMOGRAM ?
All women aged 40 and above should undergo this screening test.

Why do i need a MAMMOGRAM ?
Mammogram is able to detect breast cancer at its earliest stages, that is, before in can be felt in the breast. It is also to determine the overall state of health of breast.


How is a MAMMOGRAM performed ?
The procedure is conducted by a female radiographer and takes 10 to 30 minutes. You will need to undress from the waist ip. Your breast will be positioned one at teh time between the surfaces of two plates on the mammography machine. your breast is compressed between the two surfaces and X-ray films are taken. Two view of each breast are taken from two different angles. The Mammogram screening is safe as the extent of radiation is very minimal.


Preparation for a MAMMOGRAM examination ?
Reminders:
Do not apply perfume, deodorant, powder or cream on your breast and underarms on the day of mammogram. These may interfere with the interpretation of the mammogram. Wear a blouse and pants, or long skirt. you will need to undress from waist up during the examination.


Tips:
Make your mammogram appointment after your menstrual period as your breast are less tender then. Avoid caffeinated drinks (coffee, tea, carbonated drinks and chocolate) a week or two prior to your appoinment. Caffeine may increase breast tenderness.


What If my Mammogram is abnormal ?
Do not panic if you are told that your mammogram is abnormal. An abnormal mammogram does not mean you have breast cancer.

You will be advised accordingly and referred to the Specialist for further tests and management.

Mammogram screening is available at goverment and private hospitals.
